Private Party Boat in Austin: What You Need to Know Before You Book One
Thinking about renting a private party boat on Lake Travis for your crew? Awesome – a day on the water is hard to beat. But before you slap down a deposit, there are some key things to know (and common pitfalls to avoid). We’ve been in the Austin party boat biz for over a decade, so consider this your insider guide to booking a private charter the right way.
Choose the Right Boat Size and Type
Party boats aren’t one-size-fits-all. In Austin, you’ll find options from small pontoons to huge double-decker barges:
Smaller Pontoons (up to ~14 people): Great for intimate groups. Cheaper hourly rates, easier to maneuver. Downside: less space to dance or move around, fewer amenities.
Mid-Size Party Boats (15-30 people): These are popular for bachelor/bachelorette groups. Often have a shaded deck, some seating, maybe a basic sound system. A good balance of space vs. cost.
Large Double-Deckers (31-75 people): Essentially floating event spaces. Lots of room, likely a second level, possibly a slide, more amenities. Higher cost (and sometimes limited availability), but if you have a huge group or want to go big, this is it.
Tip: Don’t try to cram more people than allowed. Boat capacity isn’t just about comfort, it’s a legal safety limit. If you’re on the fence with group size, err on the side of a slightly bigger boat so everyone has room.
Pricing 101: Hourly Rates, Fees, and Timing
Private boats typically rent by the hour with a minimum number of hours (often 4 hours). Key cost factors:
Day of Week & Time: Saturdays are peak = highest prices. Weekdays or early morning slots can be cheaper. Sunset slots might have a premium because, well, sunsets are awesome.
Boat Size: Bigger boat, bigger price tag (not just for the boat, but often additional crew fees if the group is large).
What’s Included: Check if the rate includes the captain and fuel. With Premier, crew fees are included for most groups (only extra if 26+ people), and fuel is usually included for standard cruising. Some outfits might add a fuel surcharge or captain fee – clarify this!
Also, plan timing carefully. A “4-hour rental” includes time to get everyone on and off the boat. If you show up late, you usually don’t get extra time (boat schedules are tight on busy days). So tell your friends to be punctual – bachelor time can’t be a thing if you want max lake time.
And remember sales tax (~8.25%) and gratuity for the crew (15-20%) when budgeting.
BYOB and Food – The Rules
Most Austin party boats, including ours, are BYOB – bring your own beverages (21+ for alcohol, of course). A few guidelines:
No Glass: Almost all companies ban glass beer bottles or drinkware for safety. Opt for cans or plastic. The no-glass policy applies to all beverages — stick to cans and plastic containers for everyone's safety.
Coolers & Ice: Check if they’re provided. We include coolers with ice on our boats, so you can arrive with drinks already cold. If not provided, you’ll need to bring your own with ice.
Food: BYO snacks or catering is usually fine. Finger foods that handle heat (sandwiches, chips, fruit) work best. Some boats (like our big one) even have a grill – ask if you can use it or if crew will grill for you.
Trash & Cleanup: The crew generally handles trash at the end, but keep it tidy as you go so you’re not partying in a pile of empties. Bring trash bags just in case, or confirm they’ll be on board.
Pro tip: Consider using a delivery service for your drinks and ice. We work with Party On Delivery to have alcohol and supplies delivered dockside for private charters. That way you’re not hauling 100 lbs of ice and beer from your car.
Captain and Crew – Know the Deal
You’ll have a licensed captain provided (or a list of approved captains to choose from). Do not attempt to captain yourself unless you’re renting a small boat that explicitly allows it (rare for party barges, plus who wants that responsibility on a party day?). Our captains are Coast Guard certified and super experienced – they handle parking a 50-foot barge like it’s a Honda Civic.
A few tips:
Listen to the Safety Talk: Yes, you’re eager to crack a beer, but pay attention when the captain explains life jackets, emergency procedures, etc. It’s quick and it’s for everyone’s safety.
Crew as Helpers: On many rentals, you’ll have a deckhand too. They’re there to help – whether it’s tying up floats, refilling ice, or snapping a group photo. Treat them with respect (and offer them a burger if you’re grilling – they appreciate it!). They’ve seen it all and often love to joke around and ensure you’re having fun.
Follow Their Guidance: If the captain says “please don’t all crowd to one side” or “storm’s coming, we need to head in,” respect that. They know the lake and boat’s limits.
One more important thing: Don’t Drink and Drive – even boats. On a captained charter, you’re not driving, so relax. But if you ever rent a boat you drive yourself (some pontoon rentals allow this), designate a sober skipper. Lake Travis has police too, and a BWI (boating while intoxicated) is as serious as a DWI.
Plan Ahead for Peak Times
Summer weekends = book early. If you want a Saturday in June or July, try to reserve several weeks (even months) in advance. Our boats often sell out on prime dates well ahead of time. Same for holiday weekends (Memorial, 4th of July, Labor Day).
If you missed out on booking or started planning late:
Try Weekdays or Sundays: Fridays and Sundays may have slots open even if Saturdays are full. They’re still a blast and sometimes a bit less hectic on the lake.
Smaller Boats: If big ones are booked, see if splitting into two smaller pontoons is possible (some companies have multiple boats).
Disco Cruise Tickets: As mentioned, if a private charter isn’t happening, the ATX Disco Cruise might have spots to jump on with your group.
Know the Lake & Pickup Spot
Lake Travis is about 30 minutes from downtown Austin. Most party boats leave from marinas around the lake’s south shore. Anderson Mill Marina is one common departure (that’s where we are). Others include Emerald Point, Paradise Cove, etc.
Key things:
Transportation: Figure out how your group is getting there/back. Parking is limited at many marinas, and nobody should drive intoxicated. Consider booking a party bus or van – it adds to the fun and safety. We can help recommend options.
Arrival Time: Arrive at least 15-20 minutes early. Loading a big group takes time (waivers to sign, coolers to stow). If you’re late, you’re cutting into your own party time.
What to Wear/Bring: Lake Travis culture is casual. Swimsuits, flip flops, sunglasses, hats – all good. Bring towels if you plan to swim. Lots of sunscreen. Maybe a portable speaker for dock time (but you’ll have one on the boat). And of course, all your drinks and snacks (don’t forget a lighter if you bring a birthday cake or cigars for the groom, etc.).
Also, Lake Travis can fluctuate in depth. The captain will handle navigating, but be aware some coves get shallow – trust them if they say a certain spot is off-limits.
Respect the Lake and Laws
Lake Travis is a shared space, so a few etiquette and legal points:
No Littering: Keep Austin’s lake beautiful. Use trash bins on board. If something blows off (napkin, etc.), try to grab it.
Music Volume: You’ll crank tunes, but when near marinas or quiet coves, be mindful (captains often know where it’s okay to go full blast vs. where families are hanging out).
Safety First: No running on deck, don’t lean dangerously over rails, etc. The crew will brief you – it’s a party but we want everyone safe to party another day.
Respect Others: Devil’s Cove is the hot party spot – dozens of boats often anchor together in a cove. It’s generally rowdy fun, but be friendly to neighboring boats. Don’t trespass on someone else’s boat unless invited. And if another group wants to link up (literally tie boats together), clear it with your captain first.
Lastly, take care of each other. If one of your crew has had a bit too much to drink, help them out – get them water, shade, a life jacket if they want to swim. The goal is an epic time, and that includes everyone making it back to shore feeling great (if a bit sun-tired and buzzed).
In a Nutshell
Booking a private party boat in Austin is an amazing choice – you’ll have a blast if you plan smart. Key takeaways:
Book early for popular dates.
Know what’s included (captain, fuel, etc.) and budget for tax & tip.
Coordinate BYOB supplies (cans not glass, and use provided coolers/ice to lighten your load).
Listen to your captain and crew – they’re there to keep you safe and happy.
Arrive on time and ready to party!
If all this sounds like a lot and you’d rather have a turnkey experience, consider the ATX Disco Cruise where much of this is handled for you and you just buy a ticket. But if a private boat is your dream, now you’re equipped with the knowledge to do it right.
